Paint  Correction  & Ceramic Coatings

PAINT CORRECTION SERVICES

When your car was new, the paint possessed

a particular uniformity in depth and gloss.

These unique characteristics are what made it

look new and standout against the older cars

on the road. What happened? How did your

car lose the shine it once possessed when

you stood before it in the showroom? Over

time, the surface of your car may have been

scratched throughout the wash process.

Dealerships, drive-thru car washes,

inexperienced detailers, and misinformation

on washing technique can all lead to swirling

and scratching the outermost layer of paint

on your vehicle. It's also possible mineral

deposits from rain water or unfiltered hose

water have etched your paint and created water marks. Whatever the cause, fortunately, paint correction can often fix this damage. With each service, Rob will inform his clients on the methods he uses to fix the present damage and how to prevent future impairment to the surface of the paint.

To successfully perform paint correction, an individual must possess not only an acute awareness to detail, but also a high level of technical understanding with respect to nano-abrasive technology and machine polishing. RMD Paint Correction services remove paint at the micron level (one millionth of a meter) to remove uneven surfaces in the paint which appear as swirls and scratches. RMD uses the least abrasive method to preserve as much paint as possible. There is not a catch-all solution to fix paint imperfections, due to a variety of factors such as paint hardness, age and quality. Because not all vehicles require the same level of correction, two different paint correction packages are offered (see below).

   CERAMIC COATINGS

Ceramic coatings predate the recent popularity of their presence in the detailing industry. But what is it, how does it function, and what types of vehicles are coatings intended for? Ceramic coatings are composed of polymers, resins, and silane additives that, when applied properly, harden to create a nanoscopic protective layer over the exterior surfaces of your car. In automotive applications, the hardened layer creates an easy-to-maintain, protected surface.

Think of the surface of your vehicle in layers: typically,

a metal body panel has a layer of primer, base coat (color),

and clear coat. If there is nothing to protect the clear coat,

it is subject to environmental conditions that will

inevitably scratch, oxidize, and become deteriorated.

Protecting these layers is key to maintaining the finish

of your vehicle. Up until the last decade or so, waxes and

synthetic sealants played the role in protecting the

exterior surfaces of your car. More recently, ceramic

coatings have taken the throne as the prevailing choice

for protecting these surfaces. However, waxes, sealants,

and ceramic coatings all have their advantages and disadvantages. In comparison to traditional waxes and

sealants, ceramic coatings are superior in appearance, durability, and longevity, but they can be considerably more expensive to apply. Despite its upfront cost, the life span of ceramic coatings far exceed waxes and sealants. For most vehicles, waxing or sealing is recommended every 3-4 months; whereas, ceramic coatings have a life span that can exceed 5 years with proper annual maintenance performed on the coating.

Ceramic coatings are thin (between 1-2 microns), but hard layers. In comparison, clear coat and the underlying base and primer can exceed 120 microns, or roughly 1-2 sheets of paper. Likewise, clear coat usually has a hardness between 1 & 4 on the Mohs' scale, whereas ceramic coatings can harden to 9H or greater. Hopefully this perspective helps illustrate how coatings bond to your paint.

When asked if Rob recommends coatings, he responds with the following, "I coat all my personal vehicles, and it's one of the first things I do after purchasing a new car.  It is an extremely effective method to protect the exterior surface of a vehicle, but I do feel some aspects of coatings are exaggerated in the industry. While a coating does form a protective layer over the paint work, it is still possible for the paint to be scratched or damaged."

Single-Stage Correction

Prices Starting at - $499

Commonly referred to as a one-step correction by the detailing community, this level of polishing removes a majority of paint imperfections. As implicated by the name of the service, this degree of correction includes a single-stage of machine polishing. Because different manufacturers produce paints that vary in thickness and hardness, the manufacturer of the vehicle will often play a role in how much correction can be achieved in just a single step. Typically, Rob aims to remove at least 50%-70% of existing imperfections in this correction. In order to provide his clients with the most value, Rob tailors a system to each vehicle that effectively removes as many imperfections as possible without the risk of burning through the paint or marring the finish. Included in this service, Rob's clients receive:

  • The Signature Exterior Detail service, which includes

    • Non-marring, paint-safe hand wash with door jambs and trunk included.

    • Full wheel and wheel-well detail

    • Chemical and (or) Mechanical decontamination as needed to remove bonded contaminants

    • *6-month rated sealant applied to painted surfaces

  • Single-stage machine-polish correction, custom tailored to the client's vehicle.

Rob highly recommends ceramic coating the corrected vehicle, as coatings offer 2+ years of protection over sealants when properly cared for. Click here to read about ceramic coating services RMD has to offer.
